  1. Grab newsprint or paper textures from texturefabrik.com – its a good resource.

    Then (using photoshop):

    * For this example – add your two bits of type and illustration to a smart object
    * Add gaussian blur to the smart object – probably around 5px or so. You want it so that some areas of the linework just about blur together slightly.
    * Add a threshold adjustment layer above this and adjust – usually slide it to the right a bit to make everything a bit thicker
    * Merge together the threshold layer, smart object with your design, and your white background layer.
    * Go Filter > Filter Gallery, Brush Strokes > Spatter, then adjust settings to your preference. 8 on the radius and 12 on smoothness worked well for me. Apply the filter.
    * To colour your design quickly – make a new layer above it and fill it with your chosen colour, set the blend mode to screen or lighten
    * Import your texture, scale it to cover the whole canvas, then duplicate it.
    * Take the top layer and set the blending mode to Screen or Lighten.
*Take the bottom layer, invert it (CMD/CTRL + I), and set the blending mode to Darken. Turn the opacity down to your preference.

    Optional:

    * Make a new layer above all the rest and press CMD/CTRL+SHIFT+OPTIONAL/ALT+E. This takes your current canvas and just puts it onto one layer.
    * Grab the Move tool and click the transform box around your layer. Look at the bar toward the top of the screen and find the Interpolation drop down. Set the option to Bilinear and scale the layer to 80-90% of its original size (so only shrink it slightly).
    * Grab the layer again and scale it back up to fill the canvas – this just smooths out some of the rough edges slightly by making the quality slightly worse – fits with the aesthetic though.

For the second image with the photo – you’d follow the above steps with the type and the border box, but then just add the photo in separately of all the effects and just mess with the blending modes to make it look a bit faded.

If you’re using anything other than Photoshop then just look up tutorials for Ink Bleed effects in that software.
